Old, old post. But I agree. I generally dial my speedlight down 1 stop for outdoor fill flash.

And unless you have a really broad reflector/diffuser (one square foot or larger), all flash attachments still allow the speedlight to act as a point source of light and are worse than useless since they attenuate the light.
