Equivalence denialists shoot themselves in the foot
2 months ago

There are a few vocal equivalence denialists in this forum. They perpetuate the f/2 = f/2 = f/2 mantra, which only hurts their photography, if they really are serious and not just joking.

Here are some examples. One image shot with a FF camera and two 'equivalent' shots with a FourThirds camera. All images sampled up or down to 8 megapixels (3300 pix wide) for easy comparison.

Let's begin with the FF image. It was shot at 25 mm focal length at f/8 and ISO 400. To shoot the same image with a FourThirds camera, the Equivalence Denialists will insists on shooting at 12.5 mm, f/8 and ISO 400, because f/8 = f/8. What is wrong with this is that total light captured is only a quarter of the total light captured by the FF camera. End result is a lot of noise and unnecessarily deep DOF, which is not really there since diffraction has maimed any potential resolution the fine lens might have had.

What equivalence means, is that users of FourThirds cameras should open the aperture and not stubbornly damage the image by insisting f/8 = f/8. In the third sample the aperture is opened up to f/4 and ISO lowered to 100 while shutter speed has remained at 1/400 s. The end result is much sharper and cleaner image. Less diffraction damage, wider dynamic range and less noise due to four times the total light. Funnily enough, the old E-1 fares pretty well against a full frame camera when used with true equivalent parameters. Not so in the second sample that was shot with the denialists' parameters.

FullFrame: f/8, 1/400s, ISO400

Denialist FourThirds: f/8, 1/400s, ISO 400

Equivalent FourThirds: f/4, 1/400s, ISO 100
