Sony RX 100 III Equivalent aperture & light gathering
Jul 22, 2014

Although a good travel camera am I correct in saying it doesn't represent a true f1.8- f2.8 lens?

Well it does in terms of this actual camera sensor but if you compare it with and APS or FF camera is wont capture the same amount of light and therefore the signal to noise ratio will be lower and therefore produce more noise, than the equivalent f stops on larger sensors.

Is the above true, and also how does the f1.8 compare against a f1.8 on a bigger sensor?

For example at 70mm it says its f2.8 but it's more likely to be f5.6 equivalent or similar?

I guess you cant compare specs on compact cameras to those of bigger sensors, or if you do what is the most accurate way?

To be honest I am not sure I have expressed this very well, but I am just trying to see what impact the spec of a smaller sensor has when comparing to 35mm terms?
