According to BBB, Salvation Army spends $2,655,565,000 on "Programs" (which are supposed to be charities) out of its revenue of $3,745,103,000, or only 70% of its revenue, putting its non-charitable spending at about 30%. But analyzing other charities, I always find that each program has its own administrative and other costs, not included into the "global" overhead count. Very little in the end goes to actual charitable causes compared to the initial revenue.

but is the government any better - how much of every tax dollar do they waste?

Actually, for example, Social Security is more efficient than any charity, almost all money they collect are being transferred to intended recipients. Medicare (the government-run one, not the private-run Medicare Advantage) is more efficient than private insurance. 2 things at play: economies of scale and public oversight, things not present in private charities. And in most cases, lack of (overt or covert) private profit motive (although with privatization of government, a lot of it goes out of the window, and government becomes much less efficient - as evident in all department primarily spending their money on private contractors, and in the case of Medicare Advantage).

social security might be very efficient, but whats the point if government is taking large amounts of the money intended for it and spending them on other things?

Not taking - borrowing. It is more prudent for Social Security Trust Fund to keep money in interest-paying Treasuries than in cash.

also if government is wasting huge amounts of money over all why would people be inclined to trust them with more money for new programs? what evidence would we have that the new programs would be as good as social security and not just another wasteful program?

Maybe we should elect representatives who would enact laws to make government programs as efficient as Social Security and not just give money to their backers in government contracting industry?

perhaps we should fix this first

seriously - how can government ask for more money when they are wasting over 125 BILLION a year?
