I saw that (I was looking for the same reasons raised by the OP). I was put off because it says using a UV filter is mandotory. I don't want to use a filter.

My interpretation of that was that if you did want to use a filter that is how you had to do it. But there was nothing I could see there that would suggest to me that one would have to use a filter.

Look at the listing again. Look at the list of instructions. Under the second instruction it is written there in red lettering so that you don't miss it!!

Can't you use a clear glass filter or pop the glass out of the metal ring?
