Thinking of replacing 70-200 f4 with 80-400G
3 months ago

After a recent windfall I have a modest amount of cash burning a hole in my pocket, and have been eyeing the 80-400G lens. I would have to sell my 70-200 f4 in order to get it, so I have tried to consider all the angles (pun intended) to see whether this would be a good or bad idea.

Firstly I've looked at my use of the 70-200 f4. I don't tend to do a lot of people photography. My uses are mostly landscape of various kinds, and wildlife. I've done some up-close wildlife stuff with the 70-200 but mostly it is not long enough for this kind of shooting. Focal length analysis shows that most of my 70-200 shots are either in the 70-135mm range, or racked all the way to 200mm with a lot of these 200mm shots heavily cropped. In most types of shooting I've done, I haven't found the f4 maximum aperture to be an issue and in fact have tended to shoot slightly stopped down to 5.6 or 6.3.

For the range of 70-135 at f4, I'm thinking my new 24-120 will take care of that. It's not quite as outstandingly sharp as the 70-200 f4, but still no slouch. Obviously for cropped 200mm shots, the 80-400 will be vastly superior and gives me the possibility to crop a 400mm shot for even more reach.

I must admit I would be sad to let go of the 70-200 f4 because it really is an outstanding lens and has never let me down. So now what, if anything, am I missing?
