Alternatives to Adobe Lightroom: Corel AfterShot, Darktable, etc

I have heard that a lot of people use Lightroom for editing RAW files but I am in sticker shock about the price of $10 per month or $150 for the package. That's far too much for the amount of use I would get from editing RAWs. PCWorld said (http://www.pcworld.com/article/2304652/corel-aftershot-2-pro-review--photo-editor-a-formidable-competitor-to-adobe-lightroom.html) that Corel AfterShot was a good alternative and costs about half of Lightroom, and I heard that Darktable (http://www.darktable.org/) is a good open source alternative. What recommendations do people have for these and other Lightroom alternatives? Mainly I want to edit Pentax RAW files to get detail from areas that look blown-out in JPGs and to do noise reduction for high ISO images.
