What exactly is aperture?

I understand that the aperture is the hole through which light passes to the sensor, and that the f/stop number is relative to focal length; a higher magnification lens requires a larger opening to achieve the same depth of field as a smaller lens with a smaller opening.

What I don't understand is: in what sense can a LENS be said to have a particular aperture?

In other words, aren't the lens and the hole opening two different things? After all, the very fact that aperture is adjustable, even for a fixed-magnification lens, suggests that they are two different mechanical parts. Thanks!!
