Shooting at 1mp vs 20mp and viewing on a 1mp display
Jul 17, 2014

This subject recently came up in another thread and I'm not quite sure I have the just of this.

When a typical or enthusiast compact takes a photo at 1mp setting, is it using the entire sensor to take the photo?

In my experience, photos taken at 1mp vs 10mp are the same quality assuming the medium its viewed on is 1mp.

I mean to say, if I take a photo at 1mp and 100mp and everything else being equal, view it on a 1mp display (or print it at 1mp), will it be of the same quality. Would you be able to tell the difference?

So I guess it comes back to, does the camera use the full sensor and then reduce, or does it actual reduce the area of the sensor used to take the picture.

I really hope there is a simple answer to this : ) Maybe some cameras do it one way, and other cameras do it another? IDK. Looking forward to the experts opinion.
