Is Nikon's NEF concept officially dead now?
Jul 17, 2014

Assuming that now that NX-D versión 1.0.0 is out and CNX2 is no longer supported and you follow Nikon's cue and become an NX-D user for your NEF conversions and some very basic adjustments (contained in a separate sidecar file), you can save those only as JPGs or TIFFs and then proceed to work you image PP in some other photo editor, as there's no option in NX-D to save your files as NEFs.

This is very puzzling to me. Is Nikon telling us that the brilliant NEF file concept (self contained, non-destructive and reversible edits and camera settings) is now dead? Are they saying our workflow should be: Camera NEFs to NX-D, convert to TIFF, PP TIFF in some other photo editor, save as TIFF (no NEFs as final/archive file anymore)? And what are we supposed to use to access/work with the large/very large number of NEFs with edits we may have in our archives?

If so, that would a real pity and a massive strategic error from Nikon.
