Photography age limits

I'm wondering if as you age, you find it harder to lug around heavy photography gear. For example, consider a typical DSLR setup with 2-3 lenses including one telephoto, external flash, extra batterys, and a portable (light) tripod. This probably weighs about 7kg (16 lbs) which seems doable for an average adult for a whole day city shooting (i.e. not trekking up the Andes or anything like that). But as one gets older, I am sure there will be the temptation to trade in the heavy kit for a portable solution (a mini-DSLR, mirrorless, or bridge camera). At some point however, the temptation would become a necessity as it is no longer at all possible to carry all that gear (well, not without undue strain, anyway). I would like to hear from anyone who has had this experience to get a rough gauge of when this transition occurs.
