Love 50mm and 105mm, don't like 35mm and 85mm

I went through my photos (mainly of my child) sorted by focal length (uncropped photos only):

  • 50mm/1.8G: Love it. The perspective is just perfect. Photos look realistic.
  • 105mm/2.8 VR Macro: Great for isolating the subject from a busy background. Photos look like a painting. A bit narrow indoors, but I found that cutting off people doesn't matter. Macro is great for close-up shots.
  • 35mm/1.4: No like. Photos look too wide to me. At f/1.4 with a close subject, the wide and blurred background looks strange.
  • 85mm/1.8G: No like. Bought this lens because of the sharpness tests. It's a bad compromise between 50mm and 105mm, with unreal perspective yet not enough background blur to isolate the subject.

I'm surprised how the focal length affects composition. I started with 35mm because I thought that I could simply crop down to 85mm (given my D800's high resolution), but now I prefer to have the right lens mounted from the start.

What do you think?
