Starbursts without filters

I've just been reading about a DSLR trick. You can get good starbursts in a low light environment from a very small point of light without having to add a filter as long as you use f16. My question is whether the aperture rule is the same with M43? Because I wouldn't normally think of shutting down to f16, even on my GX7. Is there a different rule of thumb, say about f8?
