Yes, butterflies evolved with that zig zag flight to elude bird and dragonfly predators, so they're hard to pan. The Monarch evolved with another survival mechanism, bad, noxious taste which birds learn quickly, and perhaps its in their genes by now to avoid monarchs. That's probably why Monarchs have a more leisurely flight with much less zig zagging. Of course the Monarch generation that flies 1000 miles to Mexico would probably never make it with all the extra energy expended with zig zagging!

Give the butterflies in flight try. I was actually going to do that with my 16-50mm kit lens when I found it no longer works.
