You dropped the hood or the entire lens?

If it was the entire lens, that could explain what looks a lot like decentering.

In either case, I don't see how you can return an item with scratches and expect to be refunded the purchase price. The vendor certainly can no longer sell this item as new.

I dropped only the hood, and the scuffing is very slight... still, I have my doubts about them accepting it as new. The screw-threads in the tripod foot are all scraped clean, for instance, and there may be a bit of a nick in the paint on the foot's edge...

It appears that B&H's policy in cases where it doesn't quite measure up to new is to ding the customer 15%.  I can live with that.
