MacBook Air and External Monitor?

Hi,

I could use some advice.  I fairly inexperienced with photo editing, but am working on getting better.  I have a 2 year old MacBook Air which is fairly loaded:  Core i7, 8 gb memory, 512 storage.  I like the Air because it's so light and portable, but I am not convinced that the display is up to doing quality editing.  I was looking at a MacBook Pro Retina 13", because it seems to be a great compromise between portability and having excellent editing ability.  But...to get one fairly loaded with the upgraded processor and 16 gb of memory runs over $2k.  Alternatively, I was thinking about just getting an external monitor for my Air.  I don't know anything about monitors and connections.  The Air has a thunderbolt connection, but I don't think I need an Apple monitor.  So, I would appreciate your advice on whether an external monitor is a good answer, in the hopefully $400-500 range.

Thanks
