Are you smarter than a 55-300? For this Bigmos, the answer is no.

results of indoor testing

I did a set of indoor tests comparing the new Bigmos to the old DA 55-300. I managed a distance of 17 feet (5m) to my favorite test target, a dollar bill. I used a tripod, remote trigger with 3 second delay, no SR, and live view autofocus. Here's a grid of results:

To summarize my findings:

  • The Bigmos consistently underexposed.
  • 500mm is absolutely terrible regardless of aperture. There's more real resolution at 400.
  • 400mm in turn may not really be seeing any more than at 300.
  • At 300mm it looks better than the DA for the wider apertures, but the shortcomings of the DA at 300 look to me like a focus error, not an optical flaw.
