Off-topic Quattro promo image appreciation

I was just looking at the official Quattro page and this particular image got my eye (it's a promotional photo of the Quattro)

http://www.sigma-global.com/common/cameras/dp-series/index/dp2/images/02.jpg

Now there's this peculiar effect that makes the image (the object) look less like a real photo and more like it's painted or chiseled, a 2D effect almost like a graph. It's very hard to describe.

So I thought maybe some of you guys who do a lot of post-processing could explain all that, how they achieved that particular look and what exactly sets it apart from just a good photo because I can't understand it no matter how hard I try.
