Colors: DP2 vs DP2M vs DP2Q
Jul 3, 2014

Enough pixel peeping, let's talk color! So, eliminating the detail question here is half size output from SPP for DP2M and DP2Q and full size for the good old DP2. Exposure is the same for all with slight adjustments of brightness in SPP (changing light) as well as reducing NR for M and Q. Sharpness will differ a bit between them, but again, this isn't a pixel thread

Color mode is Standard for DP2 and DP2M, Neutral for DP2Q. As you can see, this brings the Merrill and Quattro very close to each other when compared to the original DP2. Other tests tend to use Standard for both which exaggerates every difference between Merrill and Quattro and leads to meaningless debate over the loss of the Foveon look. If anything, the loss must have been from DP2 to DP2M, because the original is the odd one here.

Quattro Neutral, Daylight

Merrill Standard, Sunlight

Original, Standard, Sunlight

While the overall color signature is similar between Quattro and Merrill, the Quattro colors appear cleaner in shadows, especially from in-camera JPEGs which are a big step up from DP2M.

I haven't had so much fun with a camera since the original DP2 came out, the Quattro is so much easier to get good results with than Merrill which basically took a year to tame with firmware updates and all...
