Is there really much difference between street and family pics?

Other than one group are strangers? I ask because I've been looking at a Ricoh GR and a Sony rx100m3 for a go anywhere camera to document my little kids growing up. Seems everyone uses the GR for street shooting, but then everyone says it may not be the best for family shooting. Really, what's the difference, other than obviously at portrait length, which I think neither camera hits all that well? In both cases you need to take quick, spur of the moment shots, often one handed from the hip, many times clandestinely.

I see the other difference is video. But at the end of the day, are the requirements for street shooting and trying to capture a 3 year old going down a slide while holding a 4 month old in one hand and a camera in other than much different?
