"QUAL" button on D800 is driving me NUTS!

On five occasions now, during a shoot, I have noticed my quality (which is always set to RAW) set to JPG instead.  My only conclusion is that at some point during a shoot (I shoot in portrait mode a lot), my left hand, which is supporting the camera in portrait position must press down on the QUAL button at the same time I'm changing the shutter speed, and BAM - my Qual changes from RAW to a JPG setting, and I never know about it.

I have hundreds, HUNDREDS of photos that are now cursed with their JPG settings of white balance and exposure, with no leeway for adjustments.

Can anyone PLEASE tell me WHY Nikon ever put the QUAL button where it is, and whether there's any way to lock it from being used, or otherwise lock my QUAL settings from being changed (the way you can lock shutter speed).

My D4, nor my old D300 have never changed my QUAL half-way through the shoot, and this, to me is absolutely unacceptable.

I am literally ready to rip the cover off the camera and just apply some Krazy glue on that damned button for it's caused me more harm than good.
