I know that this is not the information you are asking for but I believe one of the things you might do to markedly improve your shots is to shoot in RAW (NEF) and use some capable image editing software such as Lightroom to get the most out of what you capture. Given the camera you are using, you could easily crop and straighten your photos to get the resultsl you are looking for and at the same time improve color, tonality, sharpness, etc.

I took a crack at editing both of your photos with the following results. If I had the original jpg or NEF to start with I could have done much more - but so can you. Hope this helps.
