Dynamic Range
Jun 24, 2014

I thought the idea behind dynamic range is that photosites act like buckets that collect photons. The bigger the bucket, the more photons you can get - and by extension one imagine that the range from 0 photons-max photons would be wider...

Now, the pixel pitch for my 70D is 4.1um, for my compact S120 it is 1.8um.

Dynamic range? 11.9 ev for both... and indeed it is what I see in real life pictures, my 70D is not better than the S120. How is that possible, what did I misunderstood here?

Was thinking of going full frame partly for a better dynamic range but the 6D is rated at 12.1, 0.5ev for pixels that have >60% more surface!... I miss something here...
