what sort of customs do you have to pay?

In Brazil, customs for goods US$3000 or less are fixed at 60% of the product price, but only when bought via regular international mail (USPS in the states, for example).
Use of private courier services like FedEx, UPS, etc, incurs extra taxes levied on the product price summed with the freight cost, in most cases resulting in a total of more than 105% taxes over the product price.

That's why I only buy in US stores that send merchandise via USPS: 60% is a lot, but much better than 100% plus...

Now, for import duties in the US I really do not know

Wow, that sounds like a straight up rip off... I didn't pay anything in customs for the 12-32 I ordered from Japan, but I think that's because of the way the seller declared it and shipped it. $300 lens anyway so not a big deal either way... Seems to be a pretty common case for imports from Japan here tho.
