Hi Jeff .... you have right , the effect is quite evident here and i can understand your interest in this , knowing your preference for having in the shots great Dof , this ring flash can really give something more to make the various planes/layers coming together and  not rendering them in a harsh way ..... now i hope you are not becoming a nature photographer as i quite like this composition
