The auto focus sensor is at the bottom of the mirror box. It is easy for dust to accumulate on it and degrade auto focus on an older camera.

You can use a Rocket Blower (bulb blower) alone or one with a flexible straw attached to it to blow out any dust. Do NOT use a can of compressed air! In the picture below you can see the holes under the mirror at the bottom of the mirror box, the auto focus sensor sits below these holes.

This is most likely the problem with your camera.
