FZ1000 and Finepix S1

The FZ1000 has broken ground by applying a fixed superzoom to the 1" sensor. This camera bag in a camera design is going to make waves since it will entice many away from single lens ILC ownership based on providing superb image quality.

I'm interested though in the effect of having that basic camera design and changing the sensor size. The FinePix S1 makes an excellent comparison of type:

It's a fraction bigger than the FZ200 but has the same character as the FZ1000, with key physical differences being that it lacks a zoom ring but is weather resistant.

I would like to see an S1 released based on a 1/1.7" sensor and the size of the FZ1000. That would be a huge temptation for many. I'm guessing 25-800 possibly? The HS range looks clumpy in comparison to the SI. I thought the HS would turn FZ50esque, but it has grown warts.

The FZ1000 has, for the moment, expanded the heavy bridge camera into new levels of image quality in a way Fuji were not able. Their X-S1 and HS50 are on the large side yet not producing that much better an image as a camera 2/3 the weight. Conversely the S1 illustrated above looks a little on the small side in that guys hands.

So everything is VERY subjective. But one thing is clear. There is now scope in the bridge camera to satisfy the photographic needs of a great many more people. We here, at the Panasonic forum especially, know how the FZ200 garnered a new respect for the light bridge camera. Well the FZ1000 has just pushed the boundary of desirability right into low cost ILC territory.

Fuji have the manual lens on the HS range. It follows that the gap in the lumix range is where the magnificent manual non-extending FZ50 lens might resurface in the future in 25-400 guise. .

The FZ50: DSLR handling of a bright, non-extending Leica 35-420mm F2.8-3.7 lens. Thank you Mr Ichiro Kitao, Mr Michiharu Uematsu and Mr Yoshiyuki Inoue for having triggered the update to the FZ50.
FZ50 is still great though: http://www.juzaphoto.com/recensione.php?l=en&t=panasonic_lumix_fz50 . Performace diagram here: http://www.dpreview.com/galleries/3862228415/photos/2623982/fz50-performance-range
