Recover high ISO on a 40D?

I am using a 40D and although it's a bit old I don't really feel any need to upgrade it. I am really struggling in low light with slow lenses though and was wondering if there's anything I can do.

Most of the time I use a 35mm 1.4 and I never have any problems at all with available light. However if I need a bit more reach I have to use a zoom lens at a min 5.6 and it's just not letting enough light through. I have been playing with the ISO but anything above 800 doesn't feel usable on my camera.

Apart from buying faster glass and buying a more modern camera, is there anything I can do to gain another stop or 2?
