RX100M3 RAW comparison: Image Data Converter vs Photo Ninja
6 months ago

While we wait for Lightroom/ACR and DXO Optics Pro support, it may seem at the moment that Sony's Image Data Converter is the only show in town when in comes to processing RX100M3 RAW files.

I'm not sure how many are aware of this, but Photo Ninja has no trouble opening RX100M3 RAW files. The only problem is that Photo Ninja doesn't natively offer the lens distortion corrections that are provides in IDC, Lightroom/ACR and DXO Optics Pro. It does, however, offer a tool for you to create your own corrections, and it works pretty well.

Here is a 100% crop comparison of a photo a took using RAW + JPEG, with the original JPEG compared to the RAW processed in Image Data Converter and Photo Ninja (note - High ISO Noise Reduction was OFF, which only affects the JPEG of course):

I'm very impressed with what a good job Photo Ninja has done in virtually eliminating the noise while retaining an impressive amount of detail.

Here's the original full JPEG:
