A question for the wedding photographers on this forum
6 months ago

I note that there are several professional wedding photographers on this forum so I figured I would ask something I have always been curious about. Why don't you guys use monolights? I use a on-camera flash quite a bit  and I have a set of 580EX's and pocket wizards for off camera flash work. But I hardly every use my speedlights for off-camera work. I also own a set of Alien Bee 800's and associated light modifiers (Soft box, umbrellas, barn doors etc. That is what I use whenever possible

I get far better lighting with my mono-lights than I  could ever get with multiple speedlights. Yes I set them manually but that is not really a big deal. In every wedding I have seen there are quite a few "line them up and shoot" posed photos. Most photographers I have seen do these with a single flash on a bracket. Some use a second flash on a pole. It would seem to me that anyone  with a couple of mono-lights in softboxes would have a huge competitive advantage as regards image quality for these photos. There is also the additional income that could be derived from pre-wedding studio shoots. Although monolights can be expensive, my AB800's were cheaper that my 580EX's and set up is a breeze. You can even get battery packs if necessary for outdoor locations.

So why do I not see wedding photographers using mono-lights?
