What is highest shutter speed at which OIS effective?
Jun 17, 2014

I've been using legacy primes for FLs of 85mm and 135mm.  Obviously these are MF with no OIS.    I'm a slow shooter and not so worried about AF, although it would be handy, but I am persuaded that OIS would be a very useful feature on the 55-200mm zoom.  (It works very well on my 18-55mm zoom).  However, I'm wondering just how high a shutter speed can be used and still have the OIS playing a useful role.

If for example, one is shooting at 200mm, the old 1/FL rule of thumb would say that the SS should be 1/200.  Many people these days advocate 1/2xFL or 1/400.  What is the effective shutter speed range of the OIS on the 55-200mm zoom?  Presumably there is a point where the shutter speed becomes too brief for the mechanism to operate.  Does it still contribute real advantages at shutter speeds like 1/125 or 1/180?  Even higher?

Thanks, Rod
