6D metering bias? or not?

I noticed that 6D meter (either in center weighted or evaluative mode) is heavily biased to the selected focus point, acting almost like a spot metering.

This is fine if I am doing portraits, but gets in a way when trying to do anything else (even quick snapshots of "regular" scenery, architecture, etc).

To overcome this I resorted to that "AE lock" button, before focusing, and it usually gives me correct exposure. I shoot in AV 95% of the time, evaluative metering.

I am getting way more consistent exposures with Sony RX100, btw...

My question is - is this normal behavior of all Canon cameras (noticed that on friend's 60D too)? Any settings in the menu (I looked) to make it "better"?

Do not have any examples now, typing this from work.
