Weather sealing

I have noted that I often choose not to take my Nikon DSLR with me if I am expecting inclement weather, as I am too worried about ruining the camera.

Am I overly cautious, or should I look for a weather sealed system? m4/3 perhaps, I think the weather sealed DSLR's are out of my price range.

Or just get a tough compact for those situations?

If weather sealing is worth it, what would you recommend?

Since I was looking to upgrade my DSLR anyway (D5000), I figured it was a good time to reevaluate my setup. I'm not too heavily invested in lenses, so a switch would not be a big deal (I am sure my daughter would appreciate my Nikon kit)

In a list of qualifications on what I would like

Fast auto focus

Good image quality

Weather resistant so I am confident taking it with me

Compact size would be nice
