Why do the DPR RX10 studio shots look so bad compared to the RX100M2?
Jun 8, 2014

I am seriously considering an RX10 after having owned an RX100M2. I went into the Sony Store today with my SD card and took a few photos with one. But when I looked at them at home I saw a lot of artifacts in the jpegs - it looked to my untrained eye like over-sharpening and excessive noise reduction. Here is an example of what I mean:

RX10: 100% crop, f/2.8, ISO 800

So I took a look at the DPR studio tool to see if it was simply a JPEG processing issue, and compared it with the RX100M2. I was surprised to see that even the RX10 RAW's look significantly worse than the RX100M2 - more noise and softer:

What is going on here? The RX10 and RX100M2 share the same sensor, and much is made of the great lens on the RX10, so if anything I would have expected better results from the RX10.
