The Sigma 24-105mm F4 DG (OS) HSM lens compared to Sigma f2.8 70mm EX DG
1 month ago

As we have explored the quality of the new Sigma 24-105mm F4 DG (OS) HSM lens one of the interesting questions is just how well wil itl holds up against the primes. Clearly it will not do very well against the new Art primes, but how well does it do compared to the older primes. We have one of the older primes (the Sigma f2.8 70mm EX DG) that does work quite well on the SD1M and so we decided to run some comparisons to see just how well the news does against it. They made a direct comparison with both lenses on a tripod with the OS off on the Zoom (my older 70mm prime has no OS). The first two images below is this test. When I was taking comparison such earlier I did not focus on the comparison of the 70mm prime and the new Zoom, But looking over what I had, I found that by cropping a 51mm shot of the same flower taken with the Zoom, I could produce an image the same size as one taken with the 70mm prime lens. Those are the last two images I present below.

These are very limited tests, but I must say I am rather impressed at how well this new lens stands up to this old zoom.

All the shots are taken with a tripod. I use the timer to lower vibration as well. They are shot using CWB. I add a link to the location in our Pbase site so you have access to more information as well as to the original size of these images.

All comments are welcome!
