Step-by-step instructions to shoot night time lapse on the D800

I'm soon going on a roadtrip to the Yellowstone National Park. I've been dreaming of going there for a long time. My primary objective is Wildlife Photography and a night time lapse.

I'm renting out a Nikon 80-400mm AF-S for a week to fulfill my wildlife photography necessities. As for the time lapse, I've never used the feature on the D800. So I don't want to waste a whole night doing it wrong. I'll be outside shooting the stars so if there's any resource online that offers step-by-step instructions along with camera settings in a text format, I can print it off and use it while I'm in the field. Kindly explain or point me to a reliable online source.

Also, if you have any tips to avoid rookie mistakes while doing a night time lapse (like Aperture settings, DOF etc.), please let me know.
