whats the point of AE lock with digital cameras.

Pre-digital you had to wait for your prints to come back from the shop to see the results. You would have your dark object in the scene which you wanted exposed correctly. So you'd spot meter the object and re-compose.

Now, you can basically up the general exposure until your object is OK in the EVF, which i guess gives you the same result ?

i imagine most people are re-programming their AE lock button to something else ?
