So, why is the 58mm f/1.4 so expensive?

Just wondering. And no, I'm not troll-baiting or looking to start a flame war.

Seems to me, if Nikon had lowered the price considerably (if that was possible, of course) they could have marketed it as being the greatest portrait lens ever made for the APS-C sensor...while at the same time being one of the best normal FX primes. It could have been the must-have DX portrait lens. At, say, $700, people would have gobbled it up.

Now, I don't know a ton about lens manufacture, but comparing it to other similar lenses, I can't for the life of me figure out why the 58mm f.1,4g is priced at $1,700, which is more than twice what I imagine it should be priced.
