I'm hoping the good friend is pretty much explaining that "trains and billboards" are generally 200 dpi printing, so it wouldn't much matter what camera you used - all the way down to 4/3rds if you had decent optics.

If he's saying he can't see the difference in critical situations that count, then he's admitting to pretty severe vision loss...

Screen capture from DPreview comparisons - admittedly not critical viewing, but you don't need that to see the significant differences.
