Can of worms question, but need an ansswer (depth of field related)
Jun 4, 2014

Hi guys, here's my tricky question :

We all know a FF sensor yields, at equal settings, more background blur than a cropped one. So far, so good (I'm talking if you do do NOT back up to make up for the difference). Now, if you use CROP mode on an FF sensor, or X1.3 mode on the D7100 for instance, do you get the native DOF of the sensor, or of the crop ? I always had the impression, when using my FF Sony A7 in crop mode, that it retained the DOF properties of the FF chip ?

If anybody can chime in, but keep the maths out I'd be grateful. I'm considering a D7100 and would like to sometimes use the x1.3 crop mode, but do not want to end up with m4/3 like DOF
