Sony 70-400G/G2 vs Tamron 150-600
Jun 3, 2014

Hey all,

After several bird lens questions, my first step has been to order an A77II to complement my A99. I find that the A99 with the 70-400G2 just isn't quite long enough for birds (small songbirds). The A77II should be better, but what about more reach? So I will ask the following:

1) I'm wondering what you guys think about the Sony 70-400 lenses being compared to the Tamron 150-600. I know that the Sony is regarded as the best 400mm zoom on the market, so how does this translate against the longer lens? Will cropping the Sony to 600mm yield significantly worse results than the Tamron?

2) I have tried a teleconverter (Kenko cheaper 1.4) with the 70-400 G2 and found that the lens focuses slower and less accurately, but when the focus is on, it's pretty sharp. How does this compare to the Tamron 150-600?
