D7100 - Best autofocus settings for birding?

Hi,

I have recently upgraded to the D7100 + 300mm F/4D AF-S + TC-14E II combo for birding. I am looking for some advice on what the best autofocus settings for birding are for this combination.

Is it, for example, best to set the autofocus menu item a3 to "off"? Do you use single point or multiple points autofocus and in which situations? Please let me hear your ideas and experiences.

Thank you.
