X100S -- Inconsistent Exposures

The following two images were captured in RAW, and converted in LR 5.2 with no adjustments. DR is set to 100.

Can anyone tell me why the first picture came out so apparently underexposed? The histogram shows very little information in the top 30%.  Did the brightness in the pool simply overwhelm the meter?

Yet this one seems perfectly fine.  There are plenty of white highlights and the meter had no difficulty dealing with it.
