Hawking with NEX6 and 55-210

Had a great opportunity to "catch" a red tail hawk in my backyard today.  I am new to birding and was hoping to catch her on the perch and as she flew away.  It was a little shady, so I preset my ISO to 1600, used A priority wide open, and had AF-C w Flex Spot and rapid shutter.  I used object tracking as she was getting ready to fly away-- which was right towards the camera!

Overall felt this was a missed opportunity as the focus isn't nearly as crisp as I wanted.  Still not sure what I could have done differently?  I guess could have used DMF for the still shots and fine tuned, but is the BIF shot doable with the NEX6 or do I need to move up to the A6000?  I think I have a good copy of the lens as have gotten many excellent shots with it in the past. Thanks for your help.
