Gear vs The Photographer

Hi,

So when you take that 'great' photo, how much of it is down to the photographer (knowledge, composition, eye, light etc) and of how much importance are things like the lens, sensor quality, sharpness etc?

I am as guilty as anyone about being obsessed with 'gear' and choosing the sharpest lens and best camera... But a great photo, is a great photo no matter what its shot on / with right? But a bad photo is still a bad photo if its shot on the best Leica gear with a £5,000 lens right?

Just intrigued as to what people think?

Like I say I'm guilty of always wanting new kit but really I should be out making great photos...
