Nikon vs Tamron 70-300 VR/VC on a D40X for birding

I've been doing some recreational bird photography with the first-generation 55-200 (no VR), and while it's adequate for snapping pictures of birds at feeders, I'd like something with a bit more range. VR/VC and faster AF would be appreciated as well.

I don't expect my pictures to be National Geographic quality, but there are some cool birds in my area (notably Ospreys, Kingfishers, and Eastern Bluebirds) that I'd like to document. It's just for fun. My budget is $500 or so.

Thanks for the help!
