Why do folks advocate buying wide gamut monitors?

I'm trying to understand why some folks advocate buying wide gamut monitors over sRGB monitors for folks asking which monitor to buy on this forum.

  1. If one has to ask the question, then he/she is probably not a commercial photographer who is submitting the photos to magazines that want their submissions to be in Adobe RGB or ProPhoto RGB. So he/she doesn't need a wide gamut monitor.
  2. Will the user of a wide gamut monitor be the only one who views the photo on a monitor? If he/she sends a copy to friends, it is almost guaranteed that the friends won't have a wide gamut monitor.
  3. Will the user of a wide gamut monitor have prints made by a photo processor like Costco, CVS, Walgreens, etc.? If so, those photo processors expect images to be in the sRGB format.
  4. Does the user have a printer capable of printing wide gamut images?

So why would anyone asking which monitor to buy need a wide gamut monitor instead of a less expensive sRGB monitor?
