Would the 35mm f/1.8 work as a portrait lens on the A6000 with cropping?
May 25, 2014

I am getting an A6000, and in addition to a kit lens I was looking at getting a 50mm f/1.8 as a lens for shallow depth of field portraits and low light work.

However, I was wondering if I might be better off with the 35mm f/1.8 as a more versatile focal length. The A6000 has a 24MP sensor, so I could crop a 6000x4000 image to 4200x2800 and still get my 50mm focal length (75mm equivalent, which is adequate for portraits).

It's more expensive lens, but the 35mm (52.5mm equivalent) would probably be a much more versatile focal length in general use.

Just to put my question into context, I'm just an enthusiast who's main subjects are my kids. I currently have an RX100M2, and while it's a great camera I'm longing for the ability to do shallow depth of field portraits, hence by move to a larger sensor format.
