Smartphone with Tom Tom Europe (all maps on board) - Doesn't need telco data, only satellite.

Turn off phone (flightmode) turn on WiFi and use Skype.

Book only hotels with free wifi. Ditto for coffee shops and restaurants.

Easy, did 4 weeks in Dubai and Norther Italy - no problems.

No running around for SIM cards, no worry about data limits - NO Worry!

Kind Regards

We just ordered a Garmin 2595 and will order a map card for the UK (and Ireland).

Although we rely on Google maps through our phone for navigation in the states, there are some areas where data becomes unavailable, so the Garmin will come in handy - just have to keep the battery going, since it won't be used much.
