We recently upgraded our GPS to a basic Garmin with both North American and European maps. We have used it in the UK as well as Spain and have found it generally makes travelling a breeze, especially where few places have roads and streets laid out in a grid.

One tip - in the UK if you are entering an address for your destination, use the postal code rather than just the street address. This can save unintended detours.

In addition - Garmin let you input the whole post code - which limits the result to a street at most. TomTom only let you input all but the last 2 letters and then you have to put in the street name - which in rural areas is a massive zone and covers several villages - all with High Street as the name - for this reason I consider TomTom unfit for use.

tl/dr - Garmin good. TomTom useless.
